designed to handle complex tasks, as the Microsoft-backed startup accelerates efforts to stay ahead in the intensifying AI race.

AI agents—seen as the next evolution of digital assistants—are gaining traction across the tech industry. Major players like Microsoft, Salesforce, and Oracle are investing billions into the technology to boost productivity and streamline operations.

Starting Thursday, users on the Pro, Plus, and Team tiers can enable these advanced features. The agent can perform complex tasks like ordering a wedding outfit while factoring in details such as dress code and local weather.

To do this, ChatGPT uses a virtual computer outfitted with web-access tools. It also supports app integrations—including Gmail and GitHub—allowing it to pull relevant information to respond to user prompts.

OpenAI has begun rolling out a new agent mode for ChatGPT, marking another step forward in the push by major tech companies to develop more capable digital assistants. The move intensifies competition with Google, which is pursuing similar goals through its Gemini AI.

According to OpenAI, the new agent mode allows ChatGPT to “think” and “act” by operating through a virtual computer, enabling it to perform more complex, task-oriented commands. For instance, users could ask it to “check my calendar and summarize upcoming client meetings based on recent news.”
