Estimate trip fuel costs using current gas prices, your vehicle's MPG, and travel distance. Discover fuel savings and flexible auto insurance options.
Fuel Cost Formula
Fuel Cost = (Trip Distance ÷ Vehicle MPG) × Fuel Price per Gallon
Example
Trip Distance: 300 miles
Vehicle Fuel Economy: 30 MPG
Fuel Price: $3.32 per gallon
Fuel Used: 300 ÷ 30 = 10 gallons
Total Fuel Cost: 10 × $3.32 = $33.20

Car Insurance
Can I reduce my car insurance if I drive less?
Fuel costs and auto insurance are separate expenses, but lowering your fuel costs can make it easier to reduce your overall cost of owning a vehicle. A fuel cost calculator can also help you make decisions that may indirectly lower your insurance costs.
Here are a few ways they work together:
Reduce your total driving costs. By tracking fuel expenses, fuel economy, and trip costs, you can identify ways to save money on gas. The money you save can offset your monthly insurance premium.
Drive fewer miles. If your fuel calculator shows that certain trips are expensive, you may combine errands, carpool, or work remotely. Driving fewer miles can qualify you for low-mileage or usage-based auto insurance discounts with some insurers.
Choose a more efficient vehicle. A fuel cost calculator lets you compare vehicles based on fuel efficiency. Many fuel-efficient vehicles can also be less expensive to insure, depending on factors like repair costs, safety ratings, and theft rates.
Encourage safer driving. Drivers who focus on smooth acceleration and steady speeds often improve fuel economy. Those same habits can reduce accident risk, which may help maintain lower insurance rates over time.
Budget more effectively. Knowing your monthly fuel costs allows you to compare insurance quotes and determine the total cost of owning a vehicle instead of looking only at the insurance premium.
Example
Suppose you drive 1,000 miles per month.
Fuel before improving efficiency: $280/month
Fuel after improving efficiency: $220/month
Fuel savings: $60/month ($720/year)
You can use that $720 annual savings to:
Cover part of your auto insurance premium.
Increase your deductible to lower your monthly premium while maintaining an emergency fund.
Add valuable coverage such as roadside assistance or rental reimbursement without increasing your transportation budget.
